Genki Media Embraces A Virtual Future

In an era where connectivity defines possibility, Genki Media, a creative business incubator and consultancy firm renowned for its innovative projects, has transitioned into a fully virtual and nomadic enterprise. Established in Washington DC in 2010, Genki Media has long been anchored in a strong sense of place, with groundbreaking initiatives like ArtJamz and the site-specific Picnic Theater Company, and well-established ties to Washington’s media and influencers. But in 2023, founder Michael M. Clements made a strategic shift to Bali, embracing a virtual office model, while maintaining the company’s US registration and incorporation.

“Washington DC was amazing and provided an amazing city for my professional and entrepreneurial evolution but the global landscape has changed, making it possible to pursue one’s passions and produce work from anywhere with a steady internet connection and a good cup of matcha,” remarks Michael M. Clements, the founder and CEO of Genki Media.

Capitol Connection

Forging his path in the bustling media scene of the American capital, Clements made significant strides with prestigious publications such as Washington Life and Capitol File magazines. After over a decade of influential work, including the creation and sale of ArtJamz, a new chapter beckoned. In 2023, Clements, his partner Anchyi Wei, and their son embarked on a remote lifestyle, drawn to Bali not just for its beauty but also for the educational opportunities at the Green School, known for its commitment to environmental sustainability and international acclaim.

“The move was a considerable leap of faith,” acknowledges Clements, who, alongside Wei, sold their Union Market NE residence after twelve years. This decision was spurred by the introspection brought about by the pandemic—a poignant reminder of life’s brevity and the world’s vastness.

Clements reflects on their transition: “Bali’s culture is profoundly harmonious, balancing human, natural, and spiritual elements. Our family has embraced a commitment to a more sustainable and genuine way of living.”

This commitment involved a monumental downsizing effort—decades’ worth of belongings were sold, up-cycled, donated, or responsibly discarded. The Clements-Wel family embarked on their new journey with just seven suitcases and a mindset ready for adventure.

Creative Pivot

This geographical shift marked a significant turning point for Clements creatively. He has since completed three books, with Genki Media poised to publish and release them sequentially over the coming year.

“Embracing change has unleashed a new wave of creative energy. I’m thrilled to channel this into producing poetry that resonates across generations and refining my spoken word artistry,” Clements shares.

With ArtJamz now in capable hands, Clements can focus on expanding Genki Media’s portfolio, guiding other creatives towards achieving their dreams while concurrently pursuing his own.
